Update: Studio MDHR has announced that the app is a fake, and is currently working to have it removed from the App Store.
Original story follows…
Out of nowhere, Cuphead seemed to become an iOS game today – except it’s almost certainly a scam.
The surprise appearance of an App Store listing for the game – at the very reasonable price of £4.99 / $4.99 – set Twitter abuzz that Studio MDHR had offered up a Christmas treat. Sadly, it was too good/weird to be true.
IGN has confirmed that the support website listed on the App Store is a cloned version of the official Cuphead page, created in October of this year (i.e. after the game’s initial release) and hosted on a small Hungarian web hosting service. Elements of how the page displays – such as the YouTube dropdown menu’s default language – appear to indicate the scam originates from Hungary, too.
